Through intentions we choose experiences that change how we think. As a fixed thinker we choose known or knowable experiences that make us think like a professional, and as a fluid thinker we choose complex experiences that make us think creatively. Each process is different, coming from different parts of our minds and requiring different kinds of behaviors. Think of the fixed as reading about teenage behaviors and the fluid as actually raising a teenager -- they're profoundly different ways of educating ourselves.

Are you getting a fluid thinker's education? You may be if your life looks like this:  I observe what I do and question it. I seek others who question me. Keeping attuned to myself keeps me attuned to others. Books and ideas are fine, but I need experiences and people too. Hobbies, sports, interests, vacations, new experiences -- that's my classroom. I find that work and play are much the same for me.

How might we further your education as a fluid thinker? We might start by talking about your many performances and the ways you've engaged in them. With this expanded sense of yourself, we might discover those experiences that would move you to the fluid thinking needed to deal with the complex issues and situations you now face. We'd then see how you can integrate these new experiences into your current thinking, thus moving you to a higher level of engagement as a creative professional. All of this would occur through relaxed, informal conversations -- a fluid thinker's education is different, unique, and highly personal.
